"First and Second Samuel document the rise of the monarchy under Saul and David. Human failure lives in tension with God’s sovereignty throughout. Through divine blessing, God lifts the chosen people from the uncertain period of the Judges to a united kingdom under David, an all too human man after God’s own heart. We learn afresh in Samuel that God takes sin seriously. We also learn that God is faithful to His promise of divine election of Israel and His promise of an everlasting throne to the house of David. The Books of Samuel offer hope to all of us who endeavor, however haltingly, to seek and follow God’s will."
